We consider an FEL amplifier with an axisymmetric electron beam, circu
lar waveguide, helical undulator and guiding magnetic field. Such an F
EL amplifier configuration possesses some peculiarities when it operat
es in a regime with the negative longitudinal mass (i.e. when mu(-1 pr
oportional to)d upsilon(z)/dE < 0). It is shown that in the presence o
f strong space charge fields, the ''negative mass'' instability signif
icantly influences the FEL amplifier operation resulting in a signific
ant increase in the FEL amplifier efficiency.
