Cg. Vermeij et al., CAMPYLOBACTER-JEJUNI PERITONITIS IN A PATIENT WITH LIVER-CIRRHOSIS, European journal of gastroenterology & hepatology, 8(12), 1996, pp. 1219-1221
A 56-year-old man with alcoholic liver cirrhosis (Child-Pugh class C),
ascites and hepatocellular carcinoma developed acute diarrhoea and fe
ver. Ascites granulocyte count was 5760 per mu l. Campylobacter jejuni
grew in cultures from faeces, blood and ascites. The patient was succ
essfully treated with erythromycin. Although the incidence of bacteria
l infections including peritonitis is high in patients with endstage l
iver cirrhosis, this is one of very few cases in which Campylobacter j
ejuni has been identified as the causative microorganism.
