After tracing out the historical development of the concept of the ''f
rame'' via Freud and Winnicott and outlining the present state of disc
ussion the concept of the ''secure frame'' that was elaborated by Lang
s between 1973 and 1978 is presented in detail. It is expounded dial t
his concept can be described and valued as relevant in psychoanalytic
as well as in systems theory. This comparison illustrates that it migh
t be successful to work out a consistent psychoanalytic frame of theor
y on the epistemological basis of systems theory and to explain empiri
cally gained statements concerning the effectiveness of psychotherapeu
tic methods of proceeding, for instance the effectiveness of the ''sec
ure frame''. With that on the one hand a connection to the more recent
: systems theory is drawn, on the other hand a plea for a self-concept
of psychoanalysis as a systems theory is made.
