Abstract
In this paper we propose an inverse wave propagation (IWP) approach ba sed on the approximation of unknown fields of material parameters by m eans of local fields which have analytical solutions for the wave equa tions. We discuss the features of this approach in comparison with geo tomographic imaging techniques. One dimensional analytical procedures are represented in details while the 3D case is outlined in a sketch. Geomechanics applications of the approach illuminate practical schemes of measurements and data processing.
