Abstract
A number of observers have argued that banks should fill the corporate governance vacuum in eastern Europe. Only in few cases this has happe ned. In general, banks have not shown great interest in control rights based on ownership. This paper explains why, based on interviews with bank managers in the Czech Republic, Hungary and Poland.
