An antibiotic delivery system has been developed using collagen sponge
with liposome-encapsulated polymyxin B. Superficial, non-lethal infec
tion was produced in mice by injecting Pseudomonas aeruginosa into the
skin windows, Wounds were dressed with collagen sponge containing lip
osomal polymyxin B or containing empty liposomes (with PBS) as a contr
ol. Single dose of topically applied collagen sponge with encapsulated
polymyxin B decreased bacterial cell number as compared to the contro
l, Finally, after 8 days of experiment, the number of bacterial coloni
es dropped below 10(4) per biopsy, Presented polymyxin B delivery syst
em offers potential clinical advantages. (C) 1996 The Italian Pharmaco
