Elaborate wavefunctions representing low-energy positron-helium elasti
c scattering, which were obtained in the course of calculating accurat
e values of the scattering phase shifts, are used to determine the ele
ctron-positron annihilation rate and the Doppler-broadened annihilatio
n gamma-ray spectrum. This spectrum is also measured using room-temper
ature positrons in a Penning trap and a non-Gaussian lineshape is obse
rved for the first time. Excellent agreement is obtained between the t
heoretical spectrum and the present results.
