Me. Trigg et al., CUTANEOUS MUCOR INFECTION TREATED WITH WIDE EXCISION IN 2 CHILDREN WHO UNDERWENT MARROW TRANSPLANTATION, Journal of pediatric surgery, 31(7), 1996, pp. 976-977
Cutaneous mucor infection developed in two children who had undergone
bone marrow transplantation for treatment of leukemia. One infection o
ccurred before transplantation, and the other occurred during the peri
od of profound neutropenia after transplantation. Both children were t
reated with an extensive wide excision of the infected area, and there
was no evidence of mucor along the resected edges of tissue. Both pat
ients received extensive treatment with either amphotericin (case 1) o
r amphotericin and itraconazole (case 2). These two cases represent ag
gressive management of cutaneous mucor infections, which is believed t
o be required for the successful completion of a marrow transplantatio
n procedure. Copyright (C) 1996 by W.B. Saunders Company
