An analysis of the photo-polarimetric activity of Ae/Be Herbig stars a
nd the types of H-alpha profiles observed in their spectra has been ca
rried out using data from the literature. This analysis supports the p
resence of a relationship between the type of H-alpha profile and the
level of photo-polarimetric activity in young stars. Single profiles a
nd P Cygni profiles are observed predominantly in stars with low activ
ity; two-component profiles (characteristic of an accretion disk) are
observed more often in stars with a high level of photometric activity
. The existence of a relation of this sort indicates that the various
shapes of the observed H-alpha profiles may be explained in the framew
ork of a single axially symmetric model with circumstellar gaseous env
elopes observed at different angles to the line of sight. A phenomenol
ogical model of such envelopes is discussed.
