Bis(cyclopentadienyl)titanium(IV) dichloride and bis(cyclopentadienyl)
zirconium(IV) dichloride, when treated with the Schiff bases derived f
rom the condensation of salicyldehyde with o-aminophenol or o-aminothi
ophenol in a nonaqueous medium, form ionic complexes of the type [Cp(2
)M(L)]Cl-2, where Cp = eta(5)-C5H5, M = Ti or Zr, L = salicyclidene-o-
aminophenol (L'), salicylidene-o-aminothiophenol (L ''). The secondary
ligand reactions on these complexes resulted in a series;of-new compl
exes. In all these. reactions the metal-ring bonds do not cleave, All
the complexes-have been assigned square -pyramidal geometries.
