422 medical personnel employed by the United States Navy were administ
ered the Adult Form of the Coopersmith Self-esteem Inventory. In compa
rison to Coopersmith's 1981 normative sample, the current sample was s
ubstantially larger, geographically heterogeneous, and more reflective
of the current national population. Analysis suggests small but consi
stent increases in mean self-esteem scores across all subgroups. Nonet
heless, data from the current study are quite consistent with the find
ings from Coopersmith's 1981 normative sample.
