The Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) of NO by decane under an oxidi
zing atmosphere has been carried out on mechanical mixtures of sulfate
d zirconia with manganese oxide or copper manganite. Sulfated zirconia
s alone are inactive and MnO2 and Cu5Mn13Ox oxidize selectivity NO to
NO2 above 550 K. A simple mechanical mixture in 1/1 ratio of sulfated
zirconia, with an adequate amount of sulfur, with MnO2 or Cu5Mn13Ox de
lays the oxidation of NO, to NO2, but to a lesser extent that of decan
e. However, the main effect observed at low temperature is the large i
ncrease of NO reduction to N-2 which occurs in a large temperature ran
ge. This high reductive activity results from the combined effect of a
cid and oxidizing properties exhibited by the sulfated zirconia and Mn
O2, or Cu5Mn13Ox, respectively.
