Mode interactions on nontrivial solutions for problems with Z(2) x Z(2
) symmetry are considered. It is assumed that a path of bifurcation po
ints is being followed with two parameters and a mode interaction then
corresponds to two separate bifurcations of an extended system. This
view of mode interactions leads to efficient numerical methods for dea
ling with such points and for swapping onto the new paths of bifurcati
on points which originate there. The nondegeneracy conditions associat
ed with mode interactions are also interpreted in this context.
