A Markov process coupled with the Langmuir adsorption isotherm is deve
loped to simulate bisolute adsorption kinetics. Estimates of all model
parameters were obtained from a single-solute experiment for the adso
rption of 1,1,1-trichloroethane (TCEA) and trichloroethylene (TCE) fro
m dilute aqueous solutions onto granular activated carbon (GAC). The m
odel verifications indicate that the representation of the rate mechan
isms are adequate. The solution of the resultant model equations, whic
h are ordinary differential equations, is simpler than the solution of
the partial differential equations involved in the deterministic form
ulations. This model approach can be extended for the modeling of mult
icomponent adsorption in fixed-beds. Copyright (C) 1996 IAWQ. Publishe
