Abstract
The structure of an InP(001)-(4 x 2) surface, prepared by ion bombardm ent and annealing, has been studied by scanning tunneling microscopy. In the occupied states (sample bias V-S = -1.5 V) image three protrusi ons arranged in a triangular shape are seen in the (4 x 2) surface uni t cell. Three kinds of combination of the triangle, alpha, beta and ga mma, are found in the [110] direction. Conversely, one protrusion in t he unoccupied states (V-S = + 1.5 V) image is seen in the unit cell. A structure model of the (4 x 2) surface is proposed.
