Cerebrovascular disease may be caused by infarction or hemorrhage affe
cting the brain. Underlying disorders that may be associated with cere
brovascular disease include hypothyroidism, hypertension, sepsis, vasc
ular malformation, and neoplasia. Clinical signs consist of a sudden o
nset of neurologic deficits referable to a focal lesion in the brain.
Diagnosis is based on clinical features and neuroimaging procedures. T
reatment consists of maintaining adequate tissue oxygenation, controll
ing seizures and elevations in intracranial pressure, and treatment of
any underlying disorders.
