Abstract
We introduce an approximation scheme for determining the evolution of spatially averaged quantities in large classes of extensively chaotic dynamical systems. The case of lattices of diffusively coupled logisti c maps is presented. Results in two space dimensions show that. the sc heme succeeds in reproducing the nontrivial collective behavior observ ed in this system.
