The fraction of freely migrating defects during heavy ion irradiation
of nickel has been estimated earlier from measurements of both self-di
ffusion and swelling rates. The two data bases lead to significantly d
ifferent fractions. Possible reasons for the deviation are sketched. A
new experimental approach for self-diffusion measurements is describe
d and first results are reported which essentially cancel the earlier
deviation. At the same time the data give new information on the effec
tive sink strength.
