Hydrogenation and H-D exchange reactions of ethylene on 1 ML (monolaye
r) Fe thin film with preadsorbed atomic hydrogen proceed through the f
ormation of ethyl species and the products of ethylene and ethane show
the incorporation of preadsorbed H or D atoms. beta-H elimination ste
p of ethyl species exhibits a kinetic isotope effect; C-H cleavage is
faster than C-D cleavage. The obtained bonding energy of ethyl species
on 1 ML Fe film with adsorbed atomic hydrogen is (132 +/- 19) kJ/mol.
