Reaction of molybdenum (V) chloride with thiodipivaloylmethane results
in the title complex [C11H19OS] [MoOCl4(OH2)], the first solid state
structural example containing the 3,5-di-tert-butyl-1,2-oxathiolium sp
ecies. The aquatetrachloro-oxomolybdate (V) anion is mononuclear with
the molybdenum atom in a distorted octahedral coordination. The comple
x was characterised by chemical analysis, IR and ESR spectra, and X-ra
y crystallography. It crystallises in the monoclinic system, space gro
up P2(1)/n with a = 11.826(4), b = 9.831(3), c = 16.851(5) Angstrom, b
eta = 101.20(3)degrees, Z = 4.
