Td. Cyr et al., STRUCTURAL ELUCIDATION OF UNUSUAL POLICE EXHIBITS .2. IDENTIFICATION AND SPECTRAL CHARACTERIZATION OF N-(2-HYDROXYETHYL)AMPHETAMINE HYDROCHLORIDE, Journal of forensic sciences, 41(4), 1996, pp. 608-611
An unusual police exhibit having the physical appearance, color, and o
dor of methamphetamine hydrochloride was identified unequivocally on t
he basis of combined evidence from H-1- and C-13-NMR, mass, and infrar
ed spectroscopic examination as N-(2-hydroxyethyl)amphetamine hydrochl
oride (HEA . HCl). A minor contaminant of the exhibit was similarly id
entified as ethanolamine hydrochloride (HE . HCl), suggesting synthesi
s via reductive amination of phenylacetone. Relevant spectroscopic dat
a (H-1-, C-13-NMR, mass, and FT-IR) and spectra are presented.
