A method is developed to optimize the lateral resolution of a scanning
proton microprobe using a 3 MeV cyclotron beam. The most important pa
rt of the method is the optimization of an asymmetrical quadrupole qua
druplet, based on second-order relationships between diaphragm widths
and the full width of the spot. A STIM example is presented of cellula
r structures of rat-heart tissue.
