Abstract
A very unusual magnetic behaviour of alpha - Bi2O3 was observed in a w ide range of temperatures and magnetic fields. A longitudinal magnetoe lectric effect was found at 4.2 K. The existence of an antiferroelectr ically ordered subsystem of electric dipoles in alpha - Bi2O3 is propo sed. The mechanism of spin-orbit coupling is regarded as the physical origin for the occurrence of the ordered magnetic moments in alpha - B i2O3.
