Abstract
We present a comparison of the spectroscopic capabilities of a front s ide-illuminated thin-gate CCD and the AXAF CCD Imaging Spectrometer ba ck side-illuminated CCD for two simulated astrophysical observations b elow 1 keV. The thin-gate CCD has superior energy resolution but infer ior (although nonnegligible) quantum efficiency over this bandpass. We show that the low-noise, thin-gate CCD design provides superior deter mination of confidence intervals for spectroscopy below 1 keV.
