The independent 2:1 reactions of MMe(3) (M = Al, Ga) with 1,2-(H2P)(2)
C6H4 resulted in the formation of the novel eight-membered tetrametall
ic ring compounds with the general formula {(Me(2)M)(4)[(mu-PH)(2)(C6H
4)](2)} (M = Al (1), Ga (2)) in a nearly quantitative yield. Combining
AlMe(3) and 1,2-(H2P)(2)C6H4 in a 1:1 ratio also afforded 1. The reac
tion of AlMe(3) with 1,2-(H2N)(2)C6H4 (2:1) yielded the novel asymmetr
ic compound [(Me(2)Al)(2)AlMe(C6H4(NH)(2))(2)]. AlMe(3) (3). Compound
3 is composed of four aluminum centers which are chemically inequivale
nt. Reaction of GaMe(3) with 1,2-(H2N)(2)C6H4 in a 3:2 ratio gave {(Me
(2)Ga)(3)[(mu-NH)(2)(C6H4)(mu-NH)(C6H4NH2)]} (4). The synthesis and ch
aracterization of 1-4, including their solid-state structures, are pre
sented.
