Abstract
We report the first observation of a reversible phase transition betwe en the (root 2x root 2)R45 degrees chemisorbed phase of CO on Cu(100) with physisorbed overlayers and the compressed (7 root 2x root 2)R45 d egrees chemisorbed phase in the temperature range 23-35 K by reflectio n absorption infrared spectroscopy (RAIRS). The RAIRS data indicate th e non-equilibrium growth of physisorbed CO multilayers.
