Am. Farrell et al., ECTOPIC CUTANEOUS SCHISTOSOMIASIS - EXTRAGENITAL INVOLVEMENT WITH PROGRESSIVE UPWARD SPREAD, British journal of dermatology, 135(1), 1996, pp. 110-112
The ectopic deposition of ova of Schistosoma haematobium within the de
rmis is very rare, even in countries where infection with this tremato
de is widespread. When it does occur, it usually affects the genital a
rea. We report a patient who developed ectopic genital and extragenita
l cutaneous involvement 4 months after swimming in Lake Malawi. The le
sions appeared sequentially and spread from the genitalia in a caudoce
phalic manner. Doppler imaging of the pelvic veins did not reveal any
anomalous venous drainage to account for the distribution of these les
ions.
