Abstract
The elastic constants of several Al-based icosahedral alloys were meas
ured over a temperature range from 4 K to 1073 s by the rectangular pa
rallelepiped resonance method. The values of the bulk moduli of these
quasicrystals are similar to those of conventional cubic crystals havi
ng similar melting temperatures, while the values of Young's and shear
moduli are larger in comparison with conventional aluminium alloys. T
he latter feature is considered to be due to the strong directional bo
nding in the quasicrystals.
