Polypyrrole films containing tetrachloroferrate anions are prepared on
a platinum electrode in the potential cycling mode and the galvanosta
tic mode. Cyclic voltammetry, ESR, and elemental analysis are employed
for studying the films. Their conductivity is measured. Crater-like f
ormations are observed in the electron micrographs of the film surface
s. The cyclic voltammograms of the films are found to be stable during
cycling in acetonitrile solutions of tetraethylammonium tetrachlorofe
rrate (TEATCF) and tetraethylammonium perchlorate (TEAP) and unstable
in a sodium perchlorate solution. The cycling interval -1.0 to 1.0 V b
eing expanded to -1.5 to 1.5 V (with respect to the silver-silver-chlo
ride reference electrode), redox-capacity of the films increases three
fold in TEATCF solutions; polypyrrole in these solutions does not degr
ade, in contrast to TEAP solutions.
