A. Arefiev et al., ELECTRON-BEAM TEST OF AN IRON GAS CALORIMETER BASED ON CERAMIC PARALLEL-PLATE CHAMBERS/, Nuclear instruments & methods in physics research. Section A, Accelerators, spectrometers, detectors and associated equipment, 376(2), 1996, pp. 163-173
The baseline option for the very forward calorimetry in the CMS experi
ment is an iron/gas calorimeter based on parallel plate chambers. A sm
all prototype module of such a calorimeter, has been tested using elec
trons of 5 to 100 GeV/c momentum with various high voltages and two ga
ses: CO2 (100%) and CF4/CO2 (80/20), at atmospheric pressure. The coll
ected charge has been measured as a function of the high voltage and o
f the electron energy. The energy resolution has also been measured. C
omparisons have been made with Monte-Carlo predictions. Agreement betw
een data and simulation allows to make an estimation of the expected p
erformance of a full size calorimeter.
