The effects on animals feeding on resistant plants of widespread use o
f herbicides were studied. Aphids of the species Sipha (Rungsia) maydi
s Passerini (Chaitophoridae) and Schizaphis graminum Rondani (Aphidida
e), which feed on phloem sap of corn (Zea mays L.), were used as test-
organisms. Atrazine, an herbicide that acts via root absorption, is to
xic co aphids, and this effect is manifest rather rapidly. In both aph
id species was found rather severe tissue damage, which could be respo
nsible for the death of animals. The most striking damage occurred in
the digestive apparatus.
