Stealth has changed the way we fight, and has become a key performance
parameter of many of our premier weapon systems. This paper addresses
the importance of stealth for the next generation surface combatant.
Stealth is first defined and the fundamentals presented. Its effects o
n the enemy's kill chain are discussed. Examples are presented to show
how stealth can fundamentally change ship survivability and improve m
ission effectiveness. Arguments against stealth are addressed includin
g the need to radiate active sensors, cost and perishability. Assertio
n is made that the issue for the next surface combatant is not whether
to incorporate stealth, but rather how much?
