Abstract
This paper presents the climate responsive principles of architectural design evolved through time in the development of indigenous architec ture. A scientific analysis of settlements at Leh (Ladakh) and Jaisalm er (Rajasthan) presents their appropriateness in terms of thermal perf ormance. Principles of architectural design evolved in these settlemen ts when applied to modern buildings, illustrated through two projects designed by the author, suggest how low energy architecture, that is, sustainable, can be developed in the modem context, basically by way o f architectural design.
