Abstract
An exact calculation is presented to show that the action of the displ acement operator <(D)over cap (z)> = exp(za(dagger) - <(z)over bar a>) on any quantum state of the radiation field can be well approximated by a beam splitter whose second port is fed by a highly excited cohere nt state.
