The oxidation of anhydrous ethanol by oxygen in the presence of giant
palladium clusters of the idealized formula Pd(561)phen(60)(OAc)(180)
and Pd(561)phen(60)(PF6)(60)O-60 under mild conditions (303-323 K, 0.1
MPa) is found to proceed without the participation of free radicals o
r peroxide compounds. The primary reaction product is acetaldehyde tha
t is further converted into acetic anhydride, acetic acid, ethyl aceta
te, and acetal. A reaction mechanism, involving the CH3CH-O and CH3C=O
groups coordinated with the palladium atoms on the surface of the met
al skeleton of the cluster, is proposed.
