The catalytic properties and phase composition of multicomponent molyb
denum-containing catalysts treated under various oxidative-reductive c
onditions are studied. The phase composition is studied by X-ray phase
analysis and the reference-free differentiating dissolution (DD) tech
niques. With the aid of the DD method, the data on the elemental compo
sition, stoichiometry, and content of the complex molybdate phases are
obtained for the first time. The data on the modification of the main
phases of the catalyst, cobalt and iron molybdates, by other cations
entering the molybdate composition allows one to suggest that the mech
anism of catalysis by a multicomponent catalyst is determined by the p
roperties of one or several doped phases which exhibit all the functio
ns of an effective catalyst.
