E. Carabias et al., NODULAR CERVICAL INDURATION IN A VIOLINIST - REPORT OF A CASE WITH FINE-NEEDLE ASPIRATION CYTOLOGIC FINDINGS, Acta cytologica, 40(6), 1996, pp. 1301-1303
BACKGROUND: Nodular indurations due to repeat trauma have been previou
sly described. These subcutaneous lesions have been re-ported as occup
ational disease in male cyclists (''accessory testicles''). CASE: The
cytologic findings from a case of nodular cervical induration in a 47-
year-old violinist are reported. It consisted of a well-delimited, nod
ular lesion in the left submandibular soft parts. Fine needle aspirati
on cytology (FNAC) smears showed few spindle cells with no atypia and
scarce adipocytes in a collagen background. CONCLUSION: FNAC findings
are important in the differential diagnosis of cervical nodules. In th
is case, the subcutaneous nodule was a violinist's occupational diseas
e,for which we propose the term ''violinist's nodule.''
