The double beta decay of Cd-106 to the ground and excited states of Pd
-106 is investigated both theoretically and experimentally. The quasip
article random-phase approximation approach is used for the two-neutri
no decay mode calculations. Estimations show that detections of beta()EC decays to the ground state and 0(1)(+) excited state and ECEC(0(+)
--> 0(1)(+)) transition could be detected with today low-background t
echniques. Using a HPGe detector and an external source of natural cad
mium, new stringent limits on beta(+)beta(+)(0 nu + 2 nu), beta(+)EC(0
nu + 2 nu) and ECEC(0 nu + 2 nu) decays into the ground and excited s
tates are derived.
