The longitudinal acoustic attenuation (LAA) in the superconducting sta
te is theoretically investigated to provide a reference for experiment
al determination of the pairing symmetry. For clean superconductors th
e LAA is strongly anisotropic with the propagation direction of the ac
oustic phonon in both the d wave and the s + id wave case. For dirty s
uperconductors, the LAA obeys a power law at small omega in the d wave
case, and has no discontinuous jump at omega = 2 Delta(s)(+) in the s
+ id wave case.
