The draw ratio and the density of polymeric material in craze fibrils
can be evaluated using the small-angle X-ray scattering data obtained
for only two solvent-crazed samples, in one of which the initial liqui
d in crazes is substituted by another liquid with differing electron d
ensity. This approach was shown to be valid when this substitution was
not accompanied by any changes in the volume fraction of craze fibril
s in crazes and in the density of polymer material in fibrils. This me
thod may be used as a sensitive tool to detect a difference between th
e craze structure of various solvent-crazed samples. The conditions fo
r preparation of the test samples and X-ray examination are discussed.
