Ozonation by-products are polar in nature, are found at ng l(-1) level
s, and are sometimes unstable. As a results, the determination of thes
e compounds using conventional analytical techniques is difficult. The
objective of this study was to investigate the formation and determin
ation of aldehydes -ozonation by-products. A method for the determinat
ion of low molecular weight aldehydes in water using aqueous-phase der
ivatization with O-(2,3,4,5,6-pentafluorobenzyl)hydroxylamine has been
described. The detection limits of aldehydes with GC/ECD technique is
in the (ppt) range. This method has been used to evaluate levels of a
ldehydes in ozonated waters. The amount of aldehydes increased after o
zonation, with formaldehyde and glioxal being the dominant products. A
ldehydes formation depends on the ozone-dose: TOC ratio and quality of
raw waters.
