Data were collected on 190 students who presented with drug and alcoho
l use concerns at a large Midwestern university counseling center over
3 academic years. Based on DSM-III-R criteria, 51% of all subjects me
t the criteria for Alcohol Abuse; 35%, for Alcohol Dependence; 3%, for
Cannabis Dependence; and 3% for Polysubstance Dependence. The finding
s are discussed in relationship to a counseling center's practice of c
linical assessment of drug and alcohol use, as well as to the center's
integration of the findings with outreach programming efforts conduct
ed by practitioners.
