The absolute cross section a of the d(Li-7, p)Li-8 reaction near the E
(cm) = 0.61 MeV resonance has been measured using a Li-7 ion beam and
a windowless gas target system filled with D-2 gas. The proton yield o
f the reaction and the beta-delayed alpha-activity of the residual nuc
lides Li-8 were observed both concurrently with the elastic scattering
yield, relating sigma to the Rutherford scattering cross section sigm
a(R). The resulting values, sigma (from p) = 143.6 +/- 8.9 mb and sigm
a (from Li-8) = 151 +/- 20 mb, lead to a weighted mean value of sigma
= 153 +/- 6 mb (chi(2) = 2.26) including all available values and sigm
a = 146 +/- 5 mb (chi(2) = 0.05) removing some values from the data se
t. The consequences for the expected flux of high-energy solar neutrin
os are discussed.
