The homeodomain protein bicoid activates transcription of several targ et genes by binding to target sequences in DNA. It has recently been s hown that bicoid is also an RNA-binding protein that regulates the tra nslation of caudal mRNA. Several ways for a protein to acquire dual fu nctions can be imagined.
