The ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode) network is regarded as effective
for a multimedia telecommunication environment that enables high-speed
and broadband communication. This paper reports recent broadband serv
ices trends in public telecommunication networks and the development a
pproach for the FETEX-150 ESP(Enhanced Switching Platform). To track t
he latest ATM standards and trends, a simple, scaleable, and open arch
itecture was set forth for the FETEX-150 ESP design target at the begi
nning of the system design. This paper describes design concept and sy
stem architecture of the FETEX-150 ESP system from hardware and softwa
re design viewpoint. Also, this paper describes traffic management, sy
stem features and operation and maintenance features in the FETEX-150
ESP.
