An intercomparison of environmental gamma dose and dose rate meters wa
s organised in the Czech Republic. It involved 17 institutions from Au
stria, the Czech Republic, the Federal Republic of Germany and Slovaki
a. A total of 30 people participated in measurements using 24 instrume
nts based on 4 different detection principles. The programme of the in
tercomparison was divided into seven independent experiments which inc
luded calibration in well defined radiation fields as well as measurem
ents of natural radiation fields with different terrestrial and/or cos
mic components. The experiments did not reveal any significant differe
nces in calibration of the instruments. The differences obtained for m
easurements of the natural radiation fields could be explained by meas
urement statistics and individual behaviour of the instruments.
