This paper examines the developmental crisis for women at midlife of c
aring for an aging parent. It is based upon the authors' clinical expe
riences in outpatient settings. Developmental theory is used to explic
ate the clinical process. Parent caring is seen as an opportunity for
grieving parental shortcomings and achieving a better adaptation.
