We studied a rare initial manifestation of granulocytic sarcoma withou
t existence of an acute myelocytic leukemia in an 7-year-old child. Fi
rst symptom was an acute exophthalmus of the right eye only. Rhabdomyo
sarcoma was diagnosed initially by computed tomography. However, histo
pathologic analysis of a biopsy of the right orbit demonstrated granul
ocytic sarcoma. Spinal fluid, blood and bone marrow smears did not sho
w any evidence of acute myelocytic leukemia. The exophthalmus disappea
red under chemotherapy with no recurrence for 18 months.
