When an aqueous solution of Na-2[Mo(V)(2)O(4)EDTA] (ethylene diamine t
etraacetate) was photolyzed in the presence of excess KBr and K2S2O8 a
t neutral pH, the complex was found to be oxidized due to the reaction
s of Br-2(-.) and SO4-., respectively. Oxidation of the complex was al
so observed due to the reactions of the complex with radiolytically ge
nerated Br-2(-.) and SO4-. radicals. When the oxidation of the complex
with SO4-. was conducted in an unbuffered solution, a chain reaction
was observed in the oxidation of the complex, The time resolved kineti
cs for the formation and decay of different transient intermediates an
d the relevant rate constants were investigated with a flash photolysi
s technique, and a probable mechanism for the oxidation process was gi
ven.
