The site was partially known after the field research in the 1970. The
excavations during 1991 and 1992 showed that the flint artefacts were
not in situ and that they could originally have come from the little
headland a few meters behind the excavation area. It is impossible act
ually to place the Aurignacian occupation in the chronostratigraphy. T
he main interest of the site is the large flint collection on which we
made in-depth the typological and technological analysis. The laminar
debitage methods present similarities with the industries coming from
the North-West of Europe and not with those from the South-West of Fr
ance. Herbeville is quite the only confirmed Aurignacian open-air site
known in the geological area of the Paris Basin.
